| Alder
Alder
has a decidedly straight grain, uniform texture and little distinctive
figuring. When freshly cut, Alder is almost white, then darkens to a mellow
reddish brown after exposure. It is a medium hard wood most commonly used in
furniture.
Western Oregon has more than nine billion
board feet of red alder sawtimber, almost two-thirds of which is in
non-federal ownership as trees of 12 to 16 inches diameter; slightly more
than one-third is in trees 18 inches or larger.
